Screening and Matching

The R1 Working Committee spent a great deal of time developing criteria to screen and match individuals that are interested in becoming both social peer mentors and peer partners. The committee modeled the screening and match criteria on those developed by Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Houston and adapted them for use with adults. Big Brothers/Big Sisters offered their screening and matching information to the RRTC after Dr. DeLisa West contacted that organization, and the RRTC agreed to provide assistance to Big Brothers/Big Sisters on drafting screening questions related to substance use and mental health issues. The R1 Working Committee considered several factors in developing the screening and matching procedures for this project. Some of these factors included safety issues, mentor-peer partner compatibility, transportation issues, social skill issues, stability and character issues.
