Roundtable Discussion - April 12, 2007
Topic Area: Education
Facilitators: Roberta DePompei, Ph.D. and Lorraine Wolf, Ph.D.
Recorder: Karen A. Hart, Ph.D.
- What research should be addressed in the future to further
the field and address the most relevant gaps in our knowledge? What models/methods
should be utilized?
- How many students have TBI?
- What is the magnitude of the problem with respect to mild and moderate
TBI?
- What is the optimum environment for educating children with TBI?
- What kind of environment is best for what kind of child?
- Would specialized schools for students with TBI be most effective (similar
to state schools for the blind or state schools for the deaf)?
- Parents of children with developmental disabilities have advocacy skills. Can
those skills be transferable to families of children with TBI?
- Case management for TBI models need to be researched including the
Canadian school-to-community model.
- The person-environment fit model used in housing for ageing needs to
be researched as a possible model for people with TBI.
- We need to research how big the problem of TBI is within our educational
systems. It is imperative that we obtain accurate numbers/statistics
from which to begin conducting research and designing interventions.
- How do we get the already developed materials into the hands of the
people at the schools, communities and to the parents who need them?
- We need ways in which teachers can better assess the students with
TBI to help them academically and socially. They need to
address the cognitive issues and other issues as well.
- We need research on transitions into adulthood.
- What collaborations could be fostered to address this
topic area?
- Association of Higher Education and Disability
- McArthur Network
- NAMI
- Department of Education
