Roundtable Discussion - April 12, 2007
Topic Area: Recreation
Facilitators: Tami Guerrier, B.S., C.T.R.S. and Stuart Schleien, Ph.D.
Recorder: Karen A. Hart, Ph.D.
- What research should be addressed in the future to further
the field and address the most relevant gaps in our knowledge? What models/methods
should be utilized?
- Research is needed to determine ways to effectively educate people
on the importance of recreation in their lives following TBI.
- Research is needed on ways to utilize and sustain the supports systems
that a person with TBI and family has or develops.
- Programs with individuals with developmental disabilities have used
roles (such as photographer or runner) and worked to develop and sustain
these roles by joining in with others who have a common interest. Research
how individuals with TBI may also discover new interests or rediscover
interests and join in with others who have them so the recreational
activity can be sustained.
- Research is needed on how health is affected by recreation, for
example, how can we provide research evidence that one’s ability
to maintain their job is affected by recreation.
- How quickly after TBI can we add recreation to the rehabilitation
program and in what ways does it affect outcomes?
- In addition to the above various person-centered programs, there
needs to be assessment of the environment to increase opportunities
for recreation by decreasing barriers to recreation in the environment.
- What collaborations could be fostered to address this
topic area?
- YMCA
- National Parks and Recreation
- Vocational Rehabilitation
