The Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) on Community Integration of Persons with Traumatic Brain Injury at TIRR

T7: State-of-the-Science Conference on Community Integration for Persons with TBI

Roundtable Discussion - April 12, 2007

Topic Area: Transportation
Facilitators: Lisa Rapport, Ph.D. and Tom Seekins, Ph.D.
Recorder: Allison Clark, Ph.D.

  1. What research should be addressed in the future to further the field and address the most relevant gaps in our knowledge? What models/methods should be utilized?
    • There is a need for a comprehensive transportation needs assessment, and how such assessments can be used to develop targeted interventions.
    • There is a need to develop and evaluate interventions that may be used to facilitate independence with, and access to, transportation such as additional supports (training with a co-rider, or some sort of automated supports that could help persons navigate the public transport system). What supports would be most effective?
    • There is a need for increased awareness of state laws regarding driving for persons with TBI, increased awareness of formal driving evaluations, and the need for research evaluating the effectiveness of formal driving evaluations.
    • It is important to look at models across disabilities, and similarities and differences across populations with respect to transportation needs, factors that facilitate transportation, and barriers to transportation. For example, slowed psychomotor speed may be ‘different’ for an older driver than for a driver with slowed psychomotor speed as a result of a TBI.
    • Additional discussion included:
      • What is the population baseline for transportation-related isolation?
      • Transportation within the US, which has a different ‘transportation culture’ regarding mass transit versus transportation in European countries
      • How much transportation assistance is received versus how much is actually needed?
      • Funding issues: counties may contribute to transportation funding but do not want those funds to cross county lines.
      • The impact of transportation on employment
      • Transportation in rural areas versus urban areas
      • The use of voucher models
      • Expansion of a coordinated transport system
  2. What collaborations could be fostered to address this topic area?
    • government transportation agencies
    • NIDRR
